Councillors on the Housing and Communities committee recently agreed to refurbish the three high-rise blocks as well as work on new ways to improve the area and tackle issues such as antisocial behaviour.

A budget of up to £5.1 million will be spent on the flats to bring them up to the Scottish Housing Quality Standard and the Fife Standard.

Councillor Brian Goodall, chair of the Housing and Communities committee said: "This decision is the start of a new beginning for Broomhead Drive. Council officers, a representative group from the Area Committee and tenant representatives have all been consulted on the different options available and all tenants were invited to tell us what option they would prefer.

"From all of this work, it emerged refurbishing the flats is the best way forward for a number of reasons. Refurbishment means work can begin immediately to improve the flats for tenants, alongside our work to improve access to housing in other areas of Fife.

"The improvements the council will make will also mean there won't be an impact on the current housing need and demand in Dunfermline. We’ll also look at the possibility of implementing the model used here, where we worked closely with the local community, in other areas of Fife.

“I’d also like to give an assurance the council is committed to ensuring that any physical improvement made to Broomhead Drive will go hand in hand with strong plans to tackle other issues like anti-social behaviour on the estate to give this area a brighter future.”
